Driveway and Patio Renovation

Case Study: Extending a Driveway for Additional Parking & Rear Patio Renovation

Client’s Request:

A local resident contacted us with a request to transform a high-banked area of their property to provide additional car parking. The goal was to excavate and level the area to make it both functional and aesthetically pleasing, while avoiding interference with any underground utilities.

Our Approach:

Step 1: Comprehensive Survey and Planning
We began by carrying out a thorough statutory search and depth tests to identify the locations and depths of existing utility cables and pipes. This was a crucial step to ensure the safety and feasibility of excavation, avoiding any costly or dangerous mishaps during the project. Once we received confirmation that there were no significant obstructions or utility lines in the way, we proceeded with the excavation.

Step 2: Excavation & Disposal
We carefully excavated the existing concrete driveway and the surrounding high bank area, removing and disposing of all materials to a licensed tip. This step was done with precision to ensure no damage was done to the surrounding areas.

Step 3: Sub-Formation and Compaction
After clearing the site, we completed the sub-formation, ensuring the ground was properly compacted to provide a stable foundation for the new driveway. This stage is vital for ensuring long-lasting durability, especially in areas subjected to high traffic.

Step 4: Edging and Retaining Wall
To give the driveway a clean, professional finish, we installed a beautiful granite sett and kerb edging. For additional structural support, especially on the high side of the driveway, we built a slab retaining wall, which also enhanced the visual appeal of the space.

Step 5: Geotextile Membrane & Stone
To ensure proper drainage and prevent future shifting, we laid a high-quality geotextile membrane across the base of the excavated area. This was followed by importing a premium Type 1 stone, which was compacted to specification to create a solid, lasting base for the new driveway.

Step 6: Finishing Touches
We topped the base off with a 20mm decorative stone, chosen for both its functional properties and visual appeal, providing a durable and stylish surface that would stand the test of time.

Timeline:

Total Project Duration: 4 Days

Customer Satisfaction:

The homeowner was absolutely thrilled with the finished product. Not only did the new parking area meet all of their needs, but it also added value to their property, giving it a professional and clean appearance. In fact, the customer was so pleased with the results that they called us back shortly after to help with a new project: building a rear patio.

Customer’s Request:

The homeowner requested a brand new rear patio area that would complement their newly expanded driveway. The idea was to create a space for relaxing and entertaining guests, with an elegant, low-maintenance design.

Our Approach:

Step 1: Excavation and Disposal
We started by carefully excavating the old patio area by hand to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding landscape. All the excavated material was removed and disposed of responsibly at a licensed tip.

Step 2: Sub-Formation and Preparation
Once the old patio was removed, we laid a high-quality geotextile membrane to the compacted sub-formation. This step is essential for controlling weed growth and ensuring proper drainage beneath the new patio.

Step 3: Constructing the Patio Outline
We used sleeper-style timber units to form the outline of the new patio, securely fixing them with steel brackets to maintain strength and stability. This rustic timber framing provided a beautiful contrast to the sleek paving that was to follow.

Step 4: Laying the Indian Sandstone Slabs
The patio was finished with beautiful, individually laid Indian sandstone slabs, each carefully positioned on a wet mortar bed. The slabs were then pointed with precision to create a seamless, elegant finish. The rich, earthy tones of the Indian sandstone not only complemented the surroundings but also provided a durable, stylish surface perfect for outdoor living.
